Lycopene, a carotenoid in the same family as beta carotene, is what gives a tomato, and several other fruits, their deep red color. There is about 5 mg of lycopene per 100 gram of ripe tomato fruit. The concentration in tomatoes increases significantly during the ripening process. There are many medical conditions where lycopene supplements could potentially be helpful, but until actual human trials are done, we will not know for certain.
