Low price of Glycine

Glycine was discovered in 1820, by Henri Braconnot who boiled gelatin with sulfuric acid. Glycine exists in zwitterionic form in solution. In this form, the partial charges on different atoms as determined using Gasteiger charge method. Glycine is not essential to the human diet, as it is biosynthesized in the body from the amino acid serine. Glycine is degraded via three pathways.
Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, especially in the spinal cord, brainstem, and retina. Glycine is an intermediate in the synthesis of a variety of chemical products. It is used in the manufacture of the herbicide glyphosate. Glyphosate is a non-selective systemic herbicide used to kill weeds, especially perennials and broadcast or used in the cut-stump treatment as a forestry herbicide. Glycine encephalopathy, which is also known as nonketotic hyperglycinemia or NKH, is a genetic disorder characterized by abnormally high levels of a molecule called glycine. This molecule is an amino acid, which is a building block of proteins.
Researchers have identified several other types of glycine encephalopathy with variable signs and symptoms. The most common of these atypical types is called the infantile form. Children with this condition develop normally until they are about 6 months old, when they experience delayed development and may begin having seizures. As they get older, many develop intellectual disability, abnormal movements, and behavioral problems.
Glycine provides antioxidant protection to the body, helping to neutralize free radical molecules that can damage cell membranes. Glycine as a food additives helps prevent the breakdown of muscle by boosting creatine levels, a compound that helps build muscle mass. Glycine triggers and promotes the release of glucose into the blood stream by stimulating the glucagon hormone. Glycine is also an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, and can be found in high concentrations in the spinal cord.
