Chondroitin sulfate benefits

Chondroitin sulfate was originally isolated well before the structure was characterised, leading to changes in terminology with time. Chondroitin sulfate chains are unbranched polysaccharides of variable length containing two alternating monosaccharides. Chondroitin sulfate chains are linked to hydroxyl groups on serine residues of certain proteins. Chondroitin sulfate is a major component of extracellular matrix, and is important in maintaining the structural integrity of the tissue.
Chondroitin sulfate is a chemical that is normally found in cartilage around joints in the body. Chondroitin sulfate is manufactured from animal sources such as cow cartilage. Chondroitin sulfate is often sold in combination products that also contain glucosamine sulfate. Buying a combination product is probably not worth any extra cost.
However, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate nutritional supplements do not offer the desired pain relief for all osteoarthritis patients. Symptoms can range from mild to very severe pain in the back, neck, hands, hips, knees and/or feet. When degenerative osteoarthritis occurs in the back, it is usually referred to as facet joint osteoarthritis.
Chondroitin Sulfate as a food additive is used in the cartilage part of the joints in the body. Joint cartilage is made up of cells that are embedded in a gelatinous substance that contains collagen and a watery gel as well as proteoglycans. Chondroitin Sulfate supplements, usually taken with glucosamine sulfate supplements, can be converted into proteoglycans to provide lubrication and support for these joints. Chondroitin Sulfate may also slow the breakdown of joint cartilage in osteoarthritis.
